Description
January 1st: That day evokes memories of fear, dread, and the word, “killing” was used by African American slaves in describing the first day of the year. The dreaded day in the United States brought slave owners to open human markets to sell and trade their property. Later, it became known as the Day of Jubilee, representing the legal freedom of African American slaves. It has been marked as a bittersweet day.
Read the gut-wrenching accounts from slaves about “Hiring Day” and also learn about the celebrations that came later to mark that same day. January brings so much more to celebrate as the birthday and national holiday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We will share little-known facts about the great civil rights leader who was assassinated on April 4, 1968. We end this month’s book on a personal note involving our “Roots.” Read on. Learn something and above all, use our questions at the end of each chapter as your guide to linking what we write about this month with your family’s traditions.
